ASIS Chapter 119 - Research Triangle Park -

------------------------------May2012------------------------------------

Chairman’s Message

I want to thank everyone that attended last month’s meeting at the NC DOT Traffic Control Center. I was personally impressed at the level of access that they provided our chapter and can only hope to achieve the same level of passion for my job that Kelly Wells has working at that facility. I hope that everyone else that attended feels the same way.

We will have two more monthly meetings before the summer hiatus. Our next meeting is May 15th at the PNC Center (formerly RBC Center) where we will have Mr. Jordan Rink from Wake County Office of Emergency Management to discuss what disaster preparedness in advance of upcoming hurricane season. June 19th will be a return to the Backyard Bistro near the PNC Center for an evening happy hour meeting from 5 PM to 7 PM.

The board will be meeting in May to discuss a myriad of things to continue with a strong 2012. Among those include a possible vendor-sponsored seminar and training event in August, as well as early preparations for the year end’s LEA banquet. More information on those to follow. If you have any ideas to improve the quality of the chapter and programs, don’t hesitate to let us know. I look forward to seeing you at the future meetings!

Kind regards,

Ken Kendra

-----------------------------April 2012------------------------------------

Hey all:

Just a friendly reminder to send me an RSVP note if you plan on attending next Tuesday's meeting at the Triangle Traffic Control Center. We've already had a good number of members RSVP for this event, so it should be a good one! Due to tight security at the location, you won't be able to decide to show up at the last minute. I need to submit a list of names in advance so that they know who to expect.

If haven't done so already, please let me know if you plan to attend.

Thanks,

Ken

The April meeting will be on Tuesday the 17th at the Joint Force Headquarters, 1636 Gold Star Drive, Raleigh, NC starting at 11:30 AM as usual. There will be a presentation on the new Transportation Management Control Center and a talk on Emergency Procedures at this new North Carolina National Guard Center. The building has a high level of security and everyone must RSVP for this meeting. As always members can invite any security professional as their guest. Additional information for this visit will be published in an email.

March meeting reminder- RSVP
Our upcoming March meeting will be held on Wednesday March 21st at the RBC Center from 11:30 AM to 1 PM. The guest speaker will be Ms. Donna James from the U.S. Secret Service that will presenting a great presentation on fraud that was well-received by the Fayetteville chapter back in January. It should be a great speaker that you won't want ot miss.

Also note that the date of the meeting is Wednesday and not the traditional Tuesday, so please don't come a day earlier! Also for those that care, I have explicitly requested that we return to the burger and hot dog menu that we've had before instead of the cold sandwich meal.

If you plan to attend this meeting, please RSVP to me by reply to this email as soon as you can.

Thanks,
Ken

ASIS Chapter 119 Members and Friends,
Thank you to those of you who came out for the January chapter meeting. I think it was a great start to kick off 2012. I also wanted to thank Johnny Lee for his excellent presentation on social media. In case you hadn’t noticed, the most recent edition of ASIS Security Management magazine also had a nice article on the same topic. I encourage you to pick up a copy if you are interested to learn more.

The February meeting will be held at RBC Center and have Mr. Sam Pennica from the CCBI as the guest speaker. Sam Pennica is currently the Director of the City-County Bureau of Identification. His law enforcement career began in 1971 as a fingerprint technician with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Washington, D.C. In 1973 he became a Special Agent with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. During his career with the SBI he experienced a number of assignments which included working in the crime laboratory as a forensic latent impression analyst; field operations, as a criminal investigator; security detail for both Governors James B. Hunt and James G. Martin, and Director of the SBI Training Academy. After his retirement from the SBI in 1999, Director Pennica joined the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, Smithfield, North Carolina, as the Lieutenant in-charge of the Major Crimes Unit. In 2000, he became the Lieutenant in-charge of the Homicide Unit for the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, Fayetteville, North Carolina, later becoming the Chief of Detectives achieving the rank of Major. In August 2005, he was appointed Director of the City-County Bureau of Identification, Raleigh, North Carolina.
I also wanted to take this opportunity to remind you that our chapter will once again host a CPP review course sponsored by Lorrie Bentley-Navarro at SAS. If you have any questions regarding this excellent opportunity to progress towards ASIS certification, please contact Lorrie at 919-531-2720.
UPCOMING CALENDAR:
As promised at our January meeting, we wanted to publish a list of upcoming events so that you were aware and could plan accordingly. While we don’t have specific guest speakers lined up for all of them, the dates, locations, and topics are firmed up. Please note that after February, all meetings will be held on the 3rd week of the month now as voted by the chapter in January’s meeting. This is to hopefully free up time for those facility managers that may skip ASIS meetings to attend BOMA or IFMA meetings held on the same week. Note that due to a conflict, the upcoming March meeting will be on Wednesday and not Tuesday. I will be sure to remind everyone as it comes near.

• Wednesday Mar 21 (RBC Center)– Ms. Donna James, U.S. Secret Service

----------------------------January 2012------------------------------------

Happy New Year to everyone!

The first order of business as the incoming Chapter Chairperson is to thank Steve Vasques for his hard work and dedication to making Chapter 119 an extremely successful one. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, is to thank Jeannie Bailey for her DECADES of hard work and service as our Treasurer. They have both left some big shoes to fill. I also want to thank Ryan Moran for stepping up to take my place as Vice-Chairperson, Dennis Beck who volunteered to assume Ryan's old role as Secretary, and to Harvey Riddle for taking over the books as our Treasurer. As a team, we will do our best to fill their shoes and continue progressing as one of the best chapters in ASIS International.

UPCOMING MEETINGS:

Tuesday January 17th, 11:30 AM, RBC Center - Note that this is the 3rd Tuesday of the month as opposed to the regularly-scheduled 2nd Tuesday. Due to the compressed calendar after the busy holiday we felt that we would get better participation to push back the meeting a week. Our guest speaker in January will be Mr. Johnny Lee from Peace at Work. Mr. Lee spoke before our chapter a few years ago for a very pertinent discussion on workplace violence. The specific agenda for his presentation will be determined this week and sent out to everyone, but expect an informative and dynamic presentation to kick off 2012.

Tuesday February 14th, 11:30 AM, RBC Center - What better way to celebrate Valentine's Day than to spend lunch with ASIS Chapter 119??? Our guest speaker in February will be Mr. Sam Pennica, Director of the City-County Bureau of Identification (CCBI) who will be discussing the role of CCBI and how they integrate with local law enforcement and how they may be used as a resource for local security professionals. It's sure to be a great presentation that you won't want to miss.

I look forward to seeing all of you throughout 2012... hopefully more often than not!

Kind regards,
Ken Kendra
